• What does Sophie’s Home Equine Rescue do?

  • Sophie’s Home Equine Rescue is a veteran‑owned 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Emory, Texas. We rescue abused, neglected, and at‑risk horses, provide rehabilitation and long‑term sanctuary care, and give military veterans a meaningful hands‑on role in the healing process.​

• Where do we get our horses and donkeys?

  • Most of our herd are from slaughter pipelines. However, several have made their way to us through our volunteer and supporter network.

• How are donations used?

  • All donations directly support the care of our horses; including feed, veterinary treatment, farrier services, pasture maintenance, and rehabilitation supplies.

• Are donations to Sophie's Home tax deductible?

  • Yes! As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, your donations are tax deductible.

• Do you accept items or only monetary donations?

  • We accept both. Commonly needed items include hay, feed, medical supplies, fly control products, grooming tools, fencing materials, and farm equipment. Monetary donations are always appreciated and help us respond quickly to urgent needs.

• Can I visit the rescue?

  • Yes. We offer scheduled visits for supporters, adopters, and volunteers. Because many of our horses are in active rehabilitation, all visits must be arranged in advance to ensure safety and proper care.

• Can I volunteer?

  • Yes! Sophie’s Home is an all‑volunteer organization, and we welcome volunteers ages 13 and up. Anyone under 18 must have a parent or guardian present during all activities. Volunteers help with daily horse care, barn and pasture maintenance, rehabilitation support, and event preparation.
